KFC Football Beat hosts training session

WINDHOEK - The second edition of the Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) Football Beat kicked off in the capital with its first training session at the Sam Nujoma Stadium on Saturday.

The event will take place at the Sam Nujoma Stadium in Windhoek on 12 December.

The competition is open to boys and girls between the ages of 10 and 14 and is billed as a fun-filled experience for children to make new friends, be entertained, and bring the KFC brand and community together.

Sports Klub Windhoek (SKW) provided 16 youth coaches who will be responsible for the 16 teams in a one-day five-a-side football tournament.

Speaking to the media during the teams' first training sessions on Saturday, SKW's president of football Anibal Rego said Namibia has a lot of future Brave Warriors players and an initiative of this kind should be taken seriously.

“Today we trained kids on basic football skills such as passing the ball, goalkeeping training, as well as team work and spirit.

“Looking at the number of children who turned up today we have a lot of talented footballers who can one day represent the senior national football team. This is also a good platform for these young coaches to share what they have learned while working with other young people,” said Rego.

Thabo Ntseoane, brand manager for KFC Namibia, said KFC decided to hold the second edition of Football Beat because of the positive response from the children they got in the first edition.

“KFC Football Beat will be a fun day out for the whole community, and thus we encourage parents to get involved. The aim of this football event is to raise interest in the fun of getting engaged in sports,” said Ntseoane.

He added that KFC is planning on expanding the one-day event to other regions in Namibia if all logistics go according to plan.

“We are hoping in the future we can have officials from the Namibia Football Association at our events. We want them to start scouting for their junior national team football players at these types of events.

“We are planning by next year to host the same event in the north and coastal towns of Namibia if all goes well. Image how nice it would be if some of the talented players at this tournament would be selected for junior national teams,” he said.

A total of 1 200 children took part in the training, with 96 making it into the final teams that will participate in this year's KFC Football Beat. - Nampa
